After rescuing the Confederate capital of Richmond from capture by the enemy, Robert E. Lee marched his troops northward. To oppose him, the Union sent the newly created Army of Virginia, under the command of General John Pope.

The two forces would collide near Manassas Junction, upon the same ground where the first great battle of the war had been fought a year earlier. The sequel would see Lee thoroughly out-general Pope and score a smashing victory.
